July Week 3 Activity

The World Day for International Justice

Type of Activity – Research and Presentation

Introduction

Last week, we discussed about the World Day for International Justice and the role of ICC and ICJ. We decided to research more and get into deeper details about the importance of these bodies.  Now let us give an opportunity to our ACTIZEN students to present their research and views based on the given topic.

Expected Outcomes

  • Students will research the steps taken by ICC to try and prosecute criminals of the highest order.
  • Students will confidently present their research in front of the entire class.

Preparations

One week prior to class, divide the students in groups of 3-4 students per group.

Assign one of the below individuals, who is either tried or charged with the gravest crimes pertaining to human rights violations, to each group.

Each group should focus on the following aspects and work on a presentation:

  • Brief history of the country in which the crime was committed
  • Government form
  • Religious/ethnic/racial composition
  • Past/ongoing conflicts
  • Current situation
  • ICC case related to the person
  • Whether we should take cases like Covid 19 to the international courts and why

Inform the students that they can draw information from online encyclopaedias, embassies’ and/or ministries’ websites and the ICC website (https://www.icc-cpi.int/)

Presentations

  • Start the session with presentations - let the students present their findings.
  • Let each group present one by one.
  • Give time for questions and answers after each session.
