Main Activity Day

Step 1:  Introduction 

Tell the students that various schemes are launched by the Indian government for the economic and social development of all the children of the country. These schemes aim to cover both rural and urban areas of India for benefit of the students. 

Some schemes help in availing free education, loans at a minimum rate of interest for higher education, obtaining insurance, availing health benefits, some of the schemes concentrate on development and empowerment of female students etc.

Let us know today, about government schemes that are beneficial to the students and how.

Step 2: To help the learners know about 2 such government schemes that are  beneficial to the students in an interesting manner, we have planned this group activity.

Teachers to kindly follow the instructions given below-.

  • Divide the students into 4 groups- Group A, Group B, Group C, &  Group D. 
  • Distribute /Display information sheets and explain about the 2 schemes in short (refer schemes given in the annexure).

There are 2 schemes for the activity. 

1.Samgra Shiksha

2.Ayushman Bharat

  • Group A & B will prepare on Scheme 1 & Group C & D will work on Scheme 2. 
  • For Scheme 1 -- One group A will prepare a presentation chart on Benefits of the scheme

& other group B will prepare a presentation chart on reasons as to why has the government launched this scheme according to them. 

  • Similarly for Scheme 2 - Group C will prepare a presentation chart on Benefits of the scheme & other group D will prepare a presentation chart on reasons as to why has the government launched this scheme according to them.
  • The presentation should have 5-10 points.
  • Give 15-20 mins preparation time to each group.
  • Then the displays/charts of the presentations can be put up on the class/school notice boards for other students to see.

Step 3: Debrief and Homework:

Debrief the activity with questions like-

Teachers are requested to do a debrief session with all students to try and understand- 

  1. Why are these schemes launched by the government?
  2. How do you think knowing about various government schemes can help you to become an alert and informed and active citizen?
  3. How can this government schemes activity be useful to you and people around you?

Homework (optional)

Find out more on how to avail these schemes and share information to a person/family who needs this social and financial help by informing them about these schemes. (House-help, driver, security guards, etc.) whenever possible and let us know through the reflection sheets.

Scheme-1: Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan

Major Features 

Holistic approach to education 

  • Treat school education holistically as a continuum from Pre-school to Class 12 
  • Inclusion of senior secondary levels and pre-school levels in support for School education for the first time 

Focus on Quality of Education 

  • Enhanced focus on improving quality of education by focus on the two T’s – Teachers and Technology 
  • Enhanced Capacity Building of Teachers and School Heads 
  • Focus on strengthening Teacher Education Institutions like SCERTs and DIETs to improve the quality of prospective teachers in the system. 
  • SCERT to be the nodal institution for in-service and pre-service teacher training – will make training dynamic and need-based. 
  • Support for Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan to promote Science and Maths learning in schools.
  • Support Padhe Bharat Badhe Bharat Programme to develop foundational skills at primary level.
  • Provision of library grants for every school ranging from Rs. 5000 to Rs. 20000. 

Focus on Digital Education 

  • Support ‘Operation Digital Board’ in all secondary schools over a period of 5 years, which will revolutionize education- easy to understand, technology-based learning classrooms will become flipped classrooms. 
  • Enhanced use of digital technology in education through smart classrooms, digital boards and DTH channels
  • Digital initiatives like UDISE+, Shagun, to be strengthened.
  • Strengthening of ICT infrastructure in schools from upper primary to higher secondary level. 

Strengthening of Schools 

  • Enhanced Transport facility to children across all classes from I to VIII for universal access to school 
  • Composite school grant increased from Rs. 14,500-50,000 to Rs. 25,000- 1 Lakh and to be allocated on the basis of school enrolment.
  • Specific provision for Swachhta activities – support ‘Swachh Vidyalaya’
  • Improve the Quality of Infrastructure in Government Schools 

Focus on Girl Education 

  • Upgradation of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) from Class 6-8 to Class 6-12. 
  • Self-defence training for girls from upper primary to senior secondary stage
  • Enhanced Commitment to ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ 

Focus on Inclusion 

  • Allocation for uniforms under RTE Act enhanced from Rs. 400 to Rs. 600 per child per annum. 
  • Allocation for textbooks under the RTE Act, enhanced from Rs. 150/250 to Rs. 250/400 per child per annum. Energized textbooks to be introduced. 
  • Allocation for Children with Special Needs (CwSN) increased from Rs. 3000 to Rs. 3500 per child per annum. Stipend of Rs. 200 per month for Girls with Special Needs from Classes 1 to 12. 

Focus on Skill Development 

  • Exposure to Vocational Skills at Upper Primary Level would be extended. 
  • Vocational education for Class 9-12 as integrated with the curriculum and to be made more practical and industry oriented. 
  • Reinforce emphasis on ‘Kaushal Vikas’. 

Focus on Sports and Physical Education 

  • Sports Education to be an integral part of curriculum. 
  • Every school will receive sports equipment at the cost of Rs. 5000 for Primary Schools, Rs. 10,000 for upper primary schools and up to Rs. 25,000 for secondary and senior secondary schools to inculcate and emphasize relevance of sports.

Scheme-2: Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPMJAY) 

It is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource & Development. 

Major Objectives at school level 

  • Government of India has launched "School Health Program" under Ayushman Bharat to strengthen health promotion and disease prevention intervention. 
  • To provide age-appropriate information about health and nutrition to the children in schools.
  • To promote healthy behaviors among the children that they will inculcate for life.
  • To detect and treat diseases early in children and adolescents including identification of malnourished and anemic children with appropriate referrals to PHCs and hospitals.
  • To promote the use of safe drinking water in schools.
  • To promote safe menstrual hygiene practices by girls.
  • To promote yoga and meditation through Health & Wellness Ambassadors.
  • To encourage research on health, wellness, and nutrition for children. 

Major Features in general 

  • Touted as the world’s largest health insurance scheme, ABPMJAY was launched to cover ten crore poor families in urban and rural areas.
  • It offers an insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per annum for secondary and tertiary care across public and private hospitals.
  • Approximately 50 crore beneficiaries (over 10 crore poor and vulnerable entitled families) are eligible for the scheme.
  • Cashless hospitalization.
  • Covers up to 3 days of pre-hospitalization expenses such as medicines and diagnostics.
  • Covers up to 15 days of post-hospitalization expenses which include medicines and diagnostics.
  • No restriction on family size, gender, or age.
  • Can avail services across the country at any of the empaneled public and private hospitals.
  • The scheme includes 1,393 medical procedures.
  • Includes costs for diagnostic services, drugs, room charges, physician’s fees, surgeon charges, supplies, ICU and OT charges.
  • Public hospitals are reimbursed at par with private hospitals.
  • Eligibility Criteria: People from economically backward section including families with no adult members between 16 and 59, families with one disabled member, manual scavengers, tribal groups, ragpicker, beggar, domestic help, construction workers, sanitation workers, public transport drivers, waiters, peons, mechanic, etc.
