Introduction and explanation of the activity – 15 Mins

  1. Teacher will divide the class into at least 4 groups of 6-8 students each as per class size. More groups can be created for large class.
  2. Write the list of public spaces on board and ask groups to select 1 space as per their choice
  • Public Park/Gardens/Children Park
  • Vegetable market
  • Beaches
  • Bus stop
  • Village road/Road from school to home.
  • Monuments (or Forts/ heritage/religious places buildings)

(Note: for additional spaces in case of more groups, any other public space of teacher’s choice)

  1. Ask office bearer to draw the table on board to explain the activity to all groups as follows

Give 10 mins to groups to think about the issues and possible actions to resolve the issue through small steps to be taken by them or any citizen.

Presentation – 15 mins

  1. Teacher will begin by inviting each group to come forward and present the 2 issues and 2 action points for their assigned public space.
  2. Each group will get about 2-3 mins to do the presentation.
  3. After each presentation, other students suggest points and teacher can guide as necessary.

Creation of Duty Bond – (If teacher finds it difficult to complete in that period, they can share with the students, the Format of Duty Bond with the help of office bearers. (draw on black board).

  1. Teacher will ask each group to create the DUTY BOND on notebook paper at home if time is limited in the classroom, as per the public space of group.

Office Bearer displays the group DUTY BOND on Desh Apnayen Wall at the end of class.

You can ask other group members to sign each other’s Duty Bond to give them sense of responsibility to follow them as well. (optional)

NOTE - If time permits, teacher can give Office Bearer opportunity to do conclude this activity as mentioned below. Incase if time is short, invite the office bearer to ask the students – What did they learn from the activity?

Office Bearer will ask students in same groups to create creative slogan/quote that matches their Duty Bond. They can create their own or even use existing ones that they are aware of. (Eg – clean environment – healthy environment.) They can also create in local language, or any jingle and put up on Desh Apnayen wall of their classroom.

Office bearers will be part of any of the groups and participate in the same.

Teacher will summarize basis the discussion and conclude the following -

  1. Covering key points from everyone’s presentation. Highlight common themes like responsible use, keeping it clean, not to damage any public property, etc.
  2. Just like sharing responsibilities at home is our duty, similarly our surroundings are our larger home, and maintaining these public spaces is also our duty.

For this activity, the following can be updated by office bearers on the wall.

  • Group Duty Bond
  • Office Bearer Conclusion – Slogans/Quotes created

  • Use available papers to do the Duty Bond
  • Avoid spending on resources to beautify the group work, objective is students learn by creating Duty Bond for their actions towards public places.
  • Do not go and clean these spaces. Only Duty Bond to be created.
