December Activity-ADDRESSING NATIONWIDE ISSUES

  1. Teacher will divide the class into groups of 6-8 students as per the class size. From the themes given randomly assign the themes to groups or they can choose their issue from any of the theme given below –
    1. Education
    2. Technology
    3. Civic amenities /Public Services
    4. Environment
    5. Art & Culture preservation

Note: Refer to Annexure 1 for theme wise details.

  1. Teacher will tell students to look for 1 article/news/story from newspaper/available reading material that discussed issues faced across the country. For Example – in May, most cities of India were facing extreme heat situations. Office Bearers will ensure that students have complete this task at least one day before the activity day.

Estimated Time: 30 minutes.

  1. Divide the students into groups as per pre-activity. Each group will list out the issues they have observed in articles across the country, and as a group decides only 1 issue to take. (Eg – they have articles on climate change, but the issue that they experience locally is less rainfall or more rainfall or less heat or more heat, etc. they can choose one and work on that issue.)
  2. Task for group is
    • Prepare brief note of 3-4 sentences basis the articles showing how it represents the challenges for the selected issue. Also add state & local experience & challenges of the issue. (Note – In case any group issue doesn’t have local experience, they can skip that part in discussion with teacher.)
    • Discuss 2-3 solutions/actions that citizens can follow locally to solve this issue.
    • Prepare a one-page report covering the issue and 2-3 solutions for it. They can stick the articles they have with them.
  1. Office Bearers will display all the group presentations on Desh Apnayen wall and students can see each other’s presentation during break.

NOTE - If time permits, the teacher can give Office Bearer opportunity to do conclude this activity as mentioned below. Incase if time is short, invite the office bearer to ask the students – What did they learn from the activity?

Office Bearer will conclude the session with help of these questions. (Teacher will support to facilitate)

  1. What are some national issues that we should focus on?
  2. What are some of the solutions we can follow to solve them?
  3. How will actions taken locally help resolve them nationally?
  4. Share examples of any well-known leaders/reformers/activists know about who has started any campaign/taken solutions for national/global issues. (Anna Hazare (Lokpal Bill), Sonam Wangchuk (Ice Man of India)

Teacher will summarize the key learning points for the activity

  • Many national challenges in areas of education, environment, healthcare, technology, etc. that India is facing, and we can find out workable solutions for them.
  • To take actions for any national related issues, we need to be alert and informed about current events by reading or listening to the news, discussing with elders, etc.
  • Actions taken at our local level can help resolve these challenges at the national level over time.

For this activity, the following can be updated by office bearers on the wall.

  1. Group Presentation
  2. Any other Newspaper articles related to the identified local issue or about any citizens acting on the issue. (Encourage groups to find out from available resources) (Optional)

  • Use available papers to do the group work
  • Avoid spending on resources to beautify the group work.

Annexure 1 –

  1. Education – Issues related to Quality education. (For example: infrastructure gaps, teacher shortage, etc.)
  2. Technology – Issues related to technological services. (For example: Mobile networks, internet networks, healthcare technology, e-grievances registration, e-services like passport applications, traffic challan payment, etc.)
  3. Civic amenities – Issues related to the various civic facilities, corruption related to it, etc. (For example: National highways, hospitals, healthcare centers, trains and airport connectivity between cities, water shortage – sharing issues, etc.)
  4. Environment: Issues related to environmental challenges and practices (For example: Pollution, waste management, green spaces, sustainable practices, etc.)
  5. Art & Culture preservation – Issues related to various amenities and practices to preserve Art & culture. (For example: maintenance of historical buildings, local handicrafts are promoted, organizing art and culture programs, etc.)

Note: They can also take any other theme if they see national level challenge of that kind.
